"Chinatown Glory" - Where China Meets France - A French Provincial Dresser Makeover

When a French Provincial chest of drawers is paired with a Chinese inspired color scheme, a one-of-a-kind statement piece is created. "Chinatown Glory" is the name of this inspired piece.

With every furniture refinishing project, prep work is essential for allowing the project to go smoothly from start to finish. After a few minor repairs and scuff sanding, a shellac based primer was used to prime the dresser. Shellac based primers are best for ensuring that there is proper adhesion between the paint and the surface of the furniture. This is especially true when the surface is something slick like laminate or formica.

Behr's "Flirt Alert" spray paint was used to create a beautiful bright red base coat with the slightest hint of orange. This oil based spray paint created a smooth, sleek finish.

After letting the base coat cure for a few days, chalk paint was used to add more depth and dimension. Various colors such as purple, green, and blue were applied using the wet brush technique. This technique creates an array of depth and dimension as different colors of wet paint run together and create new colors. If you are interested in learning more about this technique, check out this video containing several furniture refinishing projects, many of which use this wet brush technique.

Different shades of gold paint brought this chest of drawers to the next level. The metallic colors add a luxurious glow that makes the paint finish very dynamic, as it shifts in the light. Royal gold, a coppery water based metallic paint, was brushed on and allowed to dry completely. An oil based gold leaf pen was then used to outline the borders and between the drawers. Gold leaf was applied using a gloss clear coat.

Finally, the gloss water based clear coat finished off the entire piece. This stunning piece of furniture provides an example of how oil, water, and shellac can all be used on the same piece of furniture with proper dry times. Allowing each coat to properly cure is the key to achieving proper adhesion and a stunning dynamic finish.
